Audio and Video Issues

Quick Checklist

Before diving into specifics, run through this quick checklist:

  1. Is your browser allowing Rippily access to your microphone/camera?
  2. Is the correct device selected?
  3. Are you in speakers-only mode without speaker access?
  4. Are you a guest without microphone/camera permissions?

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Check Browser Permissions

Your browser needs permission to access your microphone and camera. If you denied permission when first asked, you'll need to re-enable it.

Chrome / Edge:

  1. Click the lock icon (or tune icon) in the address bar
  2. Find "Microphone" and "Camera"
  3. Set both to "Allow"
  4. Refresh the page

Firefox:

  1. Click the lock icon in the address bar
  2. Click "More Information" or the permissions icon
  3. Find Microphone and Camera and set to "Allow"
  4. Refresh the page

Safari:

  1. Go to Safari → Settings → Websites
  2. Find "Camera" and "Microphone" in the sidebar
  3. Set Rippily to "Allow"
  4. Refresh the page

2. Check Device Selection

If you have multiple microphones or cameras (e.g., a headset and a built-in mic), make sure the right one is selected.

  1. Click the device settings in the Ripple toolbar
  2. Select your preferred microphone from the dropdown
  3. Select your preferred camera from the dropdown
  4. Speak or wave to confirm the correct device is active

3. Check Speakers-Only Mode

If a moderator has enabled speakers-only mode, participants are muted by default. You'll need a moderator to grant you speaker access before you can unmute.

Look for an indicator in the toolbar showing "Speakers only" or a raised-hand button. Use hand raising to signal that you'd like to speak.

4. Check Guest Permissions

If you're participating as a guest, microphone and camera access may be disabled. By default, guests can only join and chat.

The Wave owner needs to enable microphone and camera capabilities for guests in Capability Overrides.

5. Check System-Level Permissions

Some operating systems require separate permission:

  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone/Camera — make sure your browser is listed and enabled
  • Windows: Settings → Privacy → Microphone/Camera — make sure your browser has access

6. Other Devices Using Your Camera

If another application (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime) is using your camera, your browser may not be able to access it. Close other video applications and try again.

Still Not Working?

  • Try a different browser (Chrome tends to work most reliably)
  • Restart your browser completely
  • Check that your device isn't physically muted (some headsets have a hardware mute switch)
  • Test your microphone/camera on another website (e.g., webcamtest.com) to rule out a device issue
