Chat Moderation
Chat runs alongside your live session and can be a valuable tool for engagement — or a distraction if not managed. As a facilitator, you have controls to shape how chat works during your session.
Toggling Chat
You can enable or disable chat for non-facilitators. When chat is disabled, participants cannot send messages, but facilitators can still use it.
Toggle chat from the mobile moderator panel or through the ripple settings. Facilitators always retain chat access regardless of this setting.
Toggling Attachments
You can separately control whether participants can upload files and images in chat. This is useful if you want to allow text chat but prevent file sharing.
Toggle attachments from the same location as the chat toggle.
Pinning Messages
Pin important messages to keep them visible at the top of the chat. This is useful for:
- Sharing links or resources during the session
- Posting session rules or instructions
- Highlighting a participant's good question
To pin a message, click the pin icon on the message in the chat panel.
Gallery Chat Settings
Participants in the gallery have their own chat context. You can configure how chat appears and behaves for gallery participants in the Ripple editor's chat settings.
Tips
- Disable chat during focused presentations — if you want full attention on the speaker, temporarily disable chat and re-enable it for Q&A
- Use attachments thoughtfully — enabling attachments is great for collaborative sessions where participants share work; disable them for large public events where moderation is harder
- Pin the agenda — at the start of a session, post and pin the agenda or key links so participants can always find them
