Managing Participants
During a live session, you may need to mute disruptive participants, remove someone, or send people to the gallery. Rippily gives you several ways to do this.
Muting Participants
Mute a Specific Person
Use the command palette:
:pm <name>
Type enough of their name for a fuzzy match — you don't need the full name. For example, :pm Sar would match "Sarah".
You can also mute someone from the People list (:gp) — right-click their name and select Mute.
Mute Everyone
:pma
This mutes all participants at once. Useful when you need to regain control of a noisy session.
A Note on Unmuting
You cannot unmute another participant. This is a deliberate privacy protection — only the participant themselves can turn their microphone back on. If you've muted everyone and want people to speak again, let them know they can unmute themselves.
Disabling Cameras
Camera control works through the drop context menu. Right-click (or long-press on mobile) on a participant's drop (their video circle) to access options including disabling their camera.
Kicking Participants
To remove someone from the session:
:pk <name>
Or right-click their name in the People list and select Kick.
The participant will be disconnected immediately. They can rejoin unless the room is locked.
Tip: If you need to permanently prevent someone from rejoining, kick them and then lock the room (:rl). For longer-term access control, manage permissions through your Wave settings.
Sending to Gallery
Participants who are seated in drops can be sent to the gallery — the floating view for people who aren't in a specific seat. This is useful when you want to free up a seat or rearrange your layout.
Right-click a participant's drop and select Send to Gallery.
Moving Participants to a Specific Seat
To place a participant in a specific drop (seat), first toggle drop numbers so you can see which seat is which:
:dn
Then move them by name and drop number:
:dm <name> <drop#>
For example, :dm jessica 5 moves Jessica to drop 5. The name is fuzzy-matched — typing the first few characters is enough. This works whether the participant is in another seat, in the gallery, or floating.
If the target seat is already occupied, you'll see an error message. Move the current occupant first, then retry.
The People List
The People list (:gp) is your central hub for participant management. It shows:
- All connected participants
- Their current location (which zone or seat they're in)
- Their role and capability level
- Whether their hand is raised
- Their microphone and camera status
From the People list, you can right-click any participant to access the full range of moderation actions.
Using Drop Context Menus
Right-clicking (or long-pressing on mobile) directly on a participant's video drop gives you quick access to:
- Mute — silence their microphone
- Disable Camera — turn off their video
- Send to Gallery — remove them from their seat
- Remove from Ripple — kick them from the session
- Make Speaker — give them temporary speaking permissions
- Remove Speaker — revoke temporary speaking permissions
This is often the quickest way to act on a specific participant, since you can see and click them directly in the room view.
