Locking Rooms

Locking a Ripple lets you control who can join your session. When locked, new visitors see a lock screen and must request access (knock) to be admitted.

Toggling the Lock

You can lock and unlock your Ripple in several ways:

  • Command palette: :rl to lock, :ru to unlock, or :rlt to toggle
  • Creator toolbar: click the lock icon

Lock States

A locked Ripple has two states that determine what visitors see:

Locked (Host Present)

When at least one facilitator is in the room, visitors see the lock screen with a Knock button. Knocking sends a request to the facilitator, who can admit or deny them.

Locked Away (Host Away)

When no facilitator is present, the lock screen switches to a different message — typically letting visitors know that no one is available. You can configure a call-to-action button for this state (e.g., "Join our mailing list" or "Visit our website").

The switch between these states happens automatically based on facilitator presence.

The Waiting Room

When visitors knock, they appear in the Waiting Room panel. You can open it from the creator toolbar (the badge shows the number of waiting visitors) or via the People list.

Each visitor entry shows:

  • Their display name (or "Visitor" if anonymous)
  • A tick badge if they're a logged-in user
  • How long they've been waiting

Admitting Visitors

Admit one person:

:pa <name>

Or click the Admit button next to their name in the Waiting Room panel.

Admit everyone:

:paa

Or click the Admit All button at the bottom of the panel.

Denying Visitors

Deny one person:

:pd <name>

Or click the deny (X) button next to their name.

Deny everyone:

:pda

Unlocking from the Waiting Room

The Waiting Room panel also has an Unlock Room button, which unlocks the Ripple entirely and lets anyone join without needing to knock.

Customising the Lock Screen

You can customise what visitors see when your Ripple is locked. In the Ripple editor, open the Lock Settings to configure:

  • Header text — the title shown to visitors (e.g., "Session starts at 2pm")
  • Header colour — brand the lock screen with your colour
  • Image — add a logo or photo
  • Body text — the message visitors read
  • CTA button — an optional call-to-action with text, link, colour, and icon

You can set different content for each lock state:

  • Locked Default — what visitors see when a host is present (the Knock button is the primary action)
  • Locked Host Away — what visitors see when no host is present (the CTA button becomes the primary action)

Tips

  • Auto-unlock on exit — in lock settings, you can enable automatic unlocking when the last facilitator leaves, which is useful for open rooms that should only be locked during a specific event
  • Lock before events — lock the room ahead of time and customise the lock screen with event details, so early arrivals see useful information
  • Use the CTA for host-away — when you're not around, direct visitors somewhere useful: a signup page, a community link, or a schedule
