Community Policies
What Are Community Policies?
Community policies let you set clear expectations for your Wave. You can create numbered community rules, link to a policy document, and Rippily's own Community Guidelines are always shown alongside your rules automatically.
Participants see your policies in two places: on the Join Dialog before entering a Ripple, and via a guidelines icon in the toolbar during sessions.
Community Rules
Rules are short, plain-text statements that tell participants what's expected. You can add up to 10 rules, each up to 200 characters.
To manage your rules, go to Wave Settings → Policies.
You'll see numbered input fields where you can type each rule. Rules auto-save when you click away or press Enter. You can reorder rules by dragging them, and remove any rule with the delete button.
Rule Templates
Not sure what to write? Click any of the suggested templates to add them instantly:
- No hate speech or discrimination
- Mute when not speaking
- Do not record or share without consent
- No spam or self-promotion
- Don't share others' personal info
- Assume good intent
- No NSFW content
Templates that you've already added appear dimmed so you don't accidentally duplicate them.
Policy Document
If your community has a formal code of conduct or terms of participation hosted elsewhere, you can link to it by pasting the URL into the Policy document field.
This URL appears as a "Read policy" button in the guidelines panel, opening in a new tab. If you don't set a URL, this section simply doesn't appear.
Rippily's Community Guidelines
Rippily's own Community Guidelines are always shown automatically alongside your custom rules. You don't need to add or configure them — they appear at the bottom of every guidelines panel with the note "Rippily's Community Guidelines also apply."
This ensures a baseline standard of behaviour across all Waves on the platform, regardless of whether creators set their own rules.
How Participants See Policies
Before Joining
On the Join Dialog, participants see a "Community Guidelines" link below the Join button. Clicking it slides open a panel showing:
- Your numbered community rules (if any)
- Your policy document link (if set)
- A link to Rippily's Community Guidelines (always present)
During Sessions
A shield icon appears in the toolbar, visible to all participants. Clicking it opens a popover with the same guidelines panel. This makes it easy to review the rules at any time without leaving the session.
If your Wave has no custom rules or policy URL, the icon links directly to Rippily's Community Guidelines instead.
Who Can Edit Policies?
Account holders and administrators can manage community rules and the policy document URL in Wave Settings. Other roles can view policies but not edit them.
Tips
- Keep rules short and specific — "Mute when not speaking" is clearer than "Please be considerate of others' audio experience"
- Use the templates as a starting point, then customise them for your community's needs
- If you have a detailed code of conduct, host it externally and paste the link rather than trying to fit everything into the 10-rule limit
- Make sure your moderators are familiar with the rules too, so they can enforce them consistently
