Guest Access
Overview
Sometimes you need people to participate in your Ripples without becoming full Wave members. Rippily offers two types of guest access, each suited to different situations.
| Type | Scope | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest List | Whole Wave | Permanent | Known attendees (e.g., conference registrants) |
| Guest Passes | Wave or Ripple | Configurable (3dā30d or no limit) | Self-service registration links |
Guest List
The guest list is an email whitelist. Anyone whose email is on the list can access your Wave's Ripples as a guest.
Adding Entries
You can add emails one at a time, or import a CSV file with email addresses and optional display names. This is ideal when you have a registration list from an external system.
You can also export your guest list as a CSV for record-keeping.
When to Use
- You have a known list of attendees (e.g., from Eventbrite, a sign-up form, or a class roster)
- You want to pre-approve specific people before an event
- You need an audit trail of who was granted access
Guest Passes
Guest passes are self-registration links. When someone visits the link, they can create a guest account and immediately access your Wave.
Configuration
Each guest pass can have:
- Label ā for your own tracking (e.g., "Website signup link")
- Max uses ā limit how many people can register (leave empty for unlimited)
- Expires in ā how long the pass and the access it grants remain valid (3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or no expiry)
- Link to ā optionally send guests directly to a specific Ripple instead of the Wave landing page
- Bubbles ā optionally grant guests access to specific Bubbles so they can reach protected content immediately
Time-Limited Access
When a guest pass has an expiration, the access itself is time-limited. After someone uses the pass, their guest access expires on the same date as the pass. Once expired, they can no longer join Ripples in the Wave. Expired entries are automatically cleaned up.
If someone uses the same guest pass link again, their access is refreshed with a new expiry period from the current time. Existing permanent access (e.g., from being manually added to the guest list) is never downgraded by a guest pass.
Active/Disabled Toggle
Like invite links, guest passes can be toggled on and off without deleting them.
When to Use
- You want to embed a join link on your website or social media
- Attendees should self-register without you adding emails manually
- You need to direct guests straight to a specific Ripple
- You want access to automatically expire after an event or trial period
Guest Permissions
Regardless of how they access your Wave, guests have the Guest capability level by default. This means they can join and chat, but cannot use microphone or camera unless you've explicitly enabled those capabilities.
See Capability Overrides to customise what guests can do.
